Illegal, from the first gram

Cannabis is illegal in Denmark. Small amounts for yourself usually end in a fine, but every amount counts. This is what applies in Copenhagen, as in the whole country.

A small amount for yourself

A fine. For a first time with less than 10 g of hash or 50 g of herb, prosecutors' guidelines start around DKK 2,000, more for each new time. The cannabis is always taken.

More than that

The fine rises with the amount. From about 100 g of hash, the fine scale ends and prison begins.

Selling or passing it on

A criminal offence, usually with prison, even for small deals. Serious cases fall under the criminal code (section 191).

Driving

Driving with THC in your blood is an offence, with a fine and loss of licence. Traces can stay for days or weeks after you feel sober.

Growing plants

Illegal too. Plants are weighed and fined like cannabis; larger grows mean prison.

Medical cannabis

Doctors can prescribe it: the medical cannabis scheme became permanent on 1 January 2026.

HHC and similar semi-synthetic products have been banned since May 2023 and are treated like hash.

Help and harm reduction

  • Never drive or ride an e-scooter after using: traces stay long after the high.
  • Avoid HHC and unknown vapes: they are illegal and often stronger than you think.
  • Don't mix with alcohol: the effects add up.
  • In Denmark, help for drug use is free, and you can ask for it anonymously.
